100th Day and Home Hardware!

Just wanted to put up a few pics of the fun we had on 100th day and on our fieldtrip to Home Hardware! Thank you SO MUCH to the parents who helped out with 100th day stations, walked with us, manned the stations at the store, AND prepared FABULOUS treats for our parties! Our grade one program just could not happen without your support!

We are 100 days smarter!!

 On another note, Teacher Convention has come to a close and was filled with many inspirational stories! You may have seen the Herald coverage of our keynote speaker, Amanda Lindhout, who was incredibly brave in sharing her story with us.  Have a great weekend and I'll see you Monday!



Sewing Project!

 

 

                

Hi all!  The Grade 1 team has been planning a very special art activity for our “3 Schools 1 Book” project based on The One and Only Ivan.  In order to pull this off, we need parents / volunteers to come into the school, to work one on one with students.  Each student will be hand stitching a mini stuffed gorilla or elephant.

We are looking for volunteers to come into the classroom anytime from January 24^th to the 30^th.  If you are able to give even just a half an hour, this would be greatly appreciated. 

If you’d like to help out, but are not able to make it during school hours, there are still lots of ways to volunteer! 

We are requiring some parents to help prep for the project, by cutting out the patterns.  This can be done at home. We will send the fabric/ instructions home on Tuesday January 21st to be completed by Thursday January 24^th. 

If anyone has spare flannel fabric, we would gladly take it off your hands!  Because this project needs to be completed by the end of the month, we need to have the material on Monday.  Please don’t feel the need to go out and purchase, we are just asking for donations if you have any to spare!

If you are able to either:

A)     Come help kids stitch! Anytime from January 24^th-30^th, at any time of the day!

B)      Cut patterns at home on Tuesday January 21^st and 22^nd

C)      Donate fabric on Monday January 20^th

 Here are a few pictures from our launch assembly! The kids were admitted with tickets just like the real circus! It was AMAZING! Hope you have fun reading the book!

 

 

 

January Daily 5

I just had to post some pictures of our day today as we took the plunge and mixed in Work On Words to our Daily 5 rotation!  It was such a sight to behold! I was so impressed to see how well the kids were working on whichever task they chose (either Read to Self, Work on Writing, or Work on Words )! Wow! You can see that most of them were so engaged in their work, they didn't even see me sneak up behind them and take a picture! Did I already say WOW! Nice job Grade Ones!

Language arts

The children have been doing a wonderful job on their sight words and word families each week! Keep up the awesome home reading! This month we will be making lists and writing letters! (to guess who?) Our focus continues to be on CAFE reading strategies and  writer's workshop! We are starting rotations where the kids get to choose either Read To Self or Work on Writing during specific time blocks!

Math/Computers

We are moving into centres to practise hands on with our counting on strategy and will continue working on numbers to 20. We will soon start tackling subtraction and fact families to help children see the relationship between numbers in addition and subtraction equations.  We are also always working on counting by 2 to 20 and 5, 10 to 100 as well as  counting backwards from 20.   Check out Houghton Mifflin's site: http://www.eduplace.com/kids/mw/g_1.html#

Science/social

We really enjoyed our trip to Helen Schuler to learn more about Seasonal Changes and have started another  unit in science learning about our 5 senses-especially the sense of taste!! (thank you to my special jellybean sorter- you know who you are!) In Social we are continuing My Community, focusing on how people live, work,and play together peacefully. A big part of our discussion will center around Social Responsibility and we will embrace this concept through continuing to collect pull tabs in support of the Ronald McDonald house in Calgary and the Sock it to'em Program for Lethbridge charities.

Health/Art/Gym

In Health we will be learning about feelings and how certain emotions can make us physically tired or hot.  We also have several lessons coming up on personal wellness including more dental health and finding out how much sleep does a grade oner (and a grade one teacher) really need? In Gym we will be starting a new volleyball unit and are hoping to get some beach ball games going! When we are brave enough to go outdoors we will try our hand (or feet in this case) at snowshoeing!  In Art, once again, thanks to our art mom for a wonderful bear project! We've got some special surprises coming up--no sneek peeks this time!

Helen Schuler Nature Centre

What a crisp day down at the Nature Centre! The kids had fun pretending to be Chickadees and learning how people and animals adapt to weather changes in fall!  Thanks again to my caravan of drivers! You are awesome! Check out a few pics of the day!
