Spelling Program Update!
WOW! What
an amazing group of spellers we have! The kids have been doing very well on
their Friday tests and came home last night with a NEW ORANGE NOVEMBER spelling
menu glued into their yellow spelling scribblers. Please continue to choose an
activity each night from the menu and return books on Friday to be checked.
I told the kids they could have a free night off for Halloween and to go ahead
and choose T-Th. There were a few yellow
books that had gone missing so I handed out some new ones and asked the kids to
take good care of them.

Swimming Day October 25, 2016
Dear
Parents,
The Grade 3
Team has decided to take the kids swimming. Our class will be going on October
25 from 10:00-11:00 at Nicholas Sheran Pool.
In order for
every child to be transported to the swimming pool, we will need to have parent
volunteers. Our class will be leaving the school
at 9:40 in order to be at the pool and ready to swim by 10:00.
If you are
able to help with the driving please send me a quick email! A hard copy of this will be coming home tomorrow as well if you prefer to send in the form!
Thanks so much for your
support! Have a great night!

Strings in Schools
MMH is lucky to be welcoming the Strings in Schools program from the University of Lethbridge Conservatory of Music into our building this year.
Classes will run mid-November to end May, or may begin sooner should the minimum number be met sooner.
We require a minimum of 8 students to run the class, and our maximum will be 16. Registration is first come, first served; the first 16 students to return the form and payment will be in the class. Violin rental is available through the conservatory or local stores. All information is included on the registration form. If we do not reach the minimum, cheques will be returned and the class will not run.
Classes will run 1-2 lunches per week on the stage, and are offered for students in grades 3, 4 and 5. If the minimum number of registrants is met, classes will be one day/week from 11:50-12:20. If we have 16 registrants, an additional day will be added at no additional charge to families.
Next Wednesday,
October 12th, we have a grade three student bringing her violin to
school to come around and deliver the forms.
If you have questions, please direct them to Nicole Baker at nicole.baker@lethsd.ab.ca
or to the conservatory
directly.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

It’s hard to believe
that it’s already October! The first month of Grade 3 has flown by! We’ve been
working hard on learning routines and have jumped into all of our beginning

going on in the four cores!

Spelling Program
We are starting our
spelling patterns program this month and you will see some spelling homework
coming home tonight! The spelling books
will come home every Monday with a new word list written by your child. The
students will be working on these words in school but will also have a list of
activities to choose from each night. Please take 10-15 minutes each night Monday through Thursday to help your child
choose which activity they want to try out and to complete the work in the
spelling book provided.
These books will come
back to school on Friday for me to
look at and a spelling test will
also happen every Friday (unless there is no school, then we will have it on
Thursday). I have completed a spelling inventory of your child’s strengths and
weaknesses in relation to spelling patterns and have grouped them so each child
is getting instruction on the patterns they struggled with. We do word sorts
and hunts with these patterns throughout the week with the goal to help your
child recognize these spelling patterns and to apply them to other words rather
than just memorizing for the test and then forgetting when applying during real
world writing or typing. Each Friday your child will be tested on the 5 new
words, 5 old words (to keep them mastered) and 2 surprise words that fall
within the same spelling pattern to see if they are able to generalize the
pattern to new words.
Thanks so much for
your help getting this program up and running! Your time at home is greatly
appreciated and I hope to see some great gains for our spellers this year!

Bird Projects, Face Painting, Beach Day and Picnic Time!
As part of our bird project we had Mrs. Price offer to come in and face paint all the different types of birds that we were learning about. She did an amazing job of the long billed curlew, black capped chickadee, white american pelican, great horned owl, swainson's hawk, and mallard. WOW! Thank you so much for your time and talents, these were fantastic!
Of course we had to mix in some amazing sea creatures for our Beach Day theme! Check out the seahorses and sharks! Rumour has it there will be even more face painting at the Year End Picnic on June 28th.
Watch backpacks this Friday for a note coming home with reminders about the Year End Picnic. Special thanks to everyone who has already volunteered to bring watermelon, drive supplies, help supervise, cook and so much more!
June 29 Last Day of School / Class Party-thanks so much to everyone who has signed up to send treats on this day :) Also, just a reminder that this is a HALF DAY.
